10/28/2024 If you come across a post that doesn't have a download link, please post a note to me in the comments of that post (no download), and I will try to get the file uploaded and linked to that post. We have had glitches in the past, and some posts lost their downloads. Basically, I am taking down all posts (650 posts on the site), and checking each one to see if they have their download, and if not adding it. Most do not. Once I take it down, it will repost (1 per day) until I am caught up and can work on new posts. Note that MySword reads theWord modules and esword modules now, so use them if you have them. McConkey’s books are rare and wonderfully helpful jewels on the Christian life. This one is no exception, and was considered the “best” book on the subject by William Bordon, a much used young adult who made such a difference in former times and whose biography was written by the daughter-in-law of Hudson Taylor. Bordon carried it with him everywhere he went—and for good reason as you will discover! I personally had this book for many years, having found it in a used bookstore, but only picked it up to read as a result of my pastor doing a series on the Holy Spirit. Was I ever surprised and blessed, and found a personal application of the first secret—”you already have the Holy Spirit”—in my having had the book for so many years and not having read and been blessed by it.

James McConkey was a native of Pennsylvania, graduated from Princeton College (now University) in 1880 as president of his class, and later studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was influential in the work of YMCA and in the founding of Africa Inland Mission. An invalid most of his life, he died in 1937 at the age of 79.

This book was originally published by the Silver Publishing Company and offered free to anyone requesting a copy. It was copyrighted in 1897.

Excerpt: Since the creation of the human being, God has given men work to do. Even in the garden, their principal work was to dress and keep (guard) the garden, their source of food. So, God wants man to be occupied (to always work). There is a saying that “idle hands are the devil's workshop.” It is certain that people do not know how to handle prosperity. Just look at the sins people get into in their retirement. In God’s eyes, they dedicate their lives at that point to things without eternal value. God knows that if man focuses on surviving, on sustaining himself and family, etc. that he is less inclined to sin and get into idle vices. Psalms 128:2 For thou shalt eat the labor of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. There is nothing better than working hard and enjoying the fruit of your labors.
