10/28/2024 If you come across a post that doesn't have a download link, please post a note to me in the comments of that post (no download), and I will try to get the file uploaded and linked to that post. We have had glitches in the past, and some posts lost their downloads. Basically, I am taking down all posts (650 posts on the site), and checking each one to see if they have their download, and if not adding it. Most do not. William Taylor was a Methodist in the California Conference in the mid-1800’s. Although published in 1867, this article speaks to our generation. Mr. Taylor spoke about cultural refinement, secular education, the negative effects of immigration, the apathy of the churches, and other topics that apply today. The book from which this chapter is taken is called, “Seven Years’ Street Preaching in San Francisco, California.”

Summary: In this 8 chapter work (very short chapters, so this is almost a tract)by Taylor (Methodist), he examines objections to street preaching. He looks at 8 objections: a degradation of ministerial dignity, it debases (makes common) the gospel, it detracts from regular ministrations, it creates riots and confusion, it brings confrontation with civil authorities, it is impossible to preach both in the church and in the street, and it will damage the preachers voice (bronchitis and crack his voice).

Yes, it is kind of a distasteful activity. But this comes from a group that is not all that evangelistic. It was even more distasteful than God incarnated and came to earth and died the death of the cross for our salvation. So, even distasteful, we should joyfully do it and support it however we can. We should promote street preaching. Those who do it have a great reward waiting for them.

Leviticus 19:16 Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor: I am the LORD.
The definition of gossip is a person who repeats news or rumors, even murmurings or conversation that hurts other people’s image, when these people are absent and cannot defend themselves. It is a cowardly form to speak about others behind their backs (or being absent) in order to discover something (true or false) about them that they would not say in front of that person to their face because it is insulting or would humiliate the person. Gossip is an attack against the person they are talking about.
